We decided to investigate primary and secondary colours this past month. We began by reading the story 'The Warthogs Messy Day'. The warthogs were bored so they decided to paint their kitchen. They mixed primary colours together to make beautiful secondary colours.
We added food colouring to some water and made primary colours (red, blue and yellow) ice cubes.
The students then chose two different coloured ice cubes and predicted what colour the water would be when it melted.
We did an experiment using coloured water and white daisies.
First we gathered some plastic cups.
Next we filled the cups with water.
Then we added food colouring to the water.
Finally we added the white daisies.
The students made predictions as to what they thought might happen to the flowers.
- the flowers are going to turn into a rainbow (Jayla)
- I think the water is going to go up the stem and into the flower (Nash)
- the flower is going to sink (Lincoln)
- I think the stem will turn the colour that is in the cup (Max)
- maybe the top of the flower will turn a rainbow (Cole)
- when we put it in, the stem will turn the same colour (Ethan)

The next morning Matthew, Ethan, Carter and Owen discovered what
happened:
- I noticed the flowers turned colours (Matthew)
- the water sucked up through the stem and changed the colour of the flowers (Ethan)
- look the flower turned blue (Carter)
- the orange isn't as dark, maybe because it is not a primary colour...it is a secondary colour (Owen)

We took some crayons and glued them to a piece of bristol board. We brought in two hair dryers and asked the children what they think with happen.
- it will melt the crayons and then it will make a picture (Tayy)
- it will melt them (Elijah)
- the glue might come off (Sophia)
- the wrappers are plastic and they might break (Toby)
- the dryer will melt the top and then it will make a different colour (Ethan)
- the crayons with the glue on it will fall out ( Nash)
- the crayons will fall off into the paint (Matthew)
- the crayons will fall off and there will be bubbles in the glue (Jayla)

Nash explained to me that if he put the hair dryer on the top of the crayons they will melt down. He also noticed that there were bumps where the crayons had melted. He discovered that if you heat up the bumps, they will melt and the wax of the crayon will go down. Great observations Nash!
