A few weeks back we added a pirate ship and characters to our activity time. The students loved it. So we decided that we would bring in some pirate books to read to them. Unfortunately on the way to school on Tuesday, two very kind pirates, Pirate Penelope and Pirate Petunia approached Mrs. King and I, captured us and brought us back to their ship. They told us that they would take over the class and if the children misbehaved we would have to walk the plank. Mrs. King and I reassured them that we had a great class and there would be no walking the plank.
When the students arrived that morning they were very shocked to see that we were not there. The pirates introduced themselves. Tayy asked "What did you do with our teachers?". They explained to them that we had been captured. Pirate Petunia started off the morning reading the book 'Pirates Go to School'. The students listened very attentively.
After the story was read a few of the students were interested in making patches for their eyes. The students thought we could get some black construction paper,
yarn, white chalk and scissors. So Pirate Penelope gathered the materials and met her mateys at the craft centre.

Cameron said " Arrrggggghhhh....I'm a pirate!"
After having fun making patches, some of the students asked if they could use the big blocks to make a pirate ship.
It was time for Pirate Penelope and Pirate Petunia to leave as their ship was setting sail to find a buried treasure. They had so much fun and because the students were so well behaved they told them that they will not be having our teachers walk the plank and would return them safely!
Mrs. King and Mrs. Doyle returned safely. The pirates had told us that all the students were great and that they loved all the pirate things they did. So Mrs. King decided to read some more books about pirates and then create a Venn diagram to graph the similarities and differences between the two books.
Mrs. Doyle brought in a large box and together the students decided to make it into a pirate ship. So first the students took turns painting the ship. We decided to paint it black, yellow and red. Once the paint dried Mrs. King helped the students turn it into a ship.
Finally Toby adds an anchor to our very cool pirate ship. Ay...Ay....Mateys!
At the same time the ship was being built, some students wanted to make pirate hats to wear while they were traveling the seas.
Mrs. King brought in a smaller box because the children suggested that we make a treasure box. They thought we needed to fill it with jewellery and gold.
Finally, Mrs. King read a story about a treasure map and we placed some blank paper and chart paper at the language centre. The students had so much fun creating their very own treasure maps and labeling all the different things.
Toby searched through our Mr. Potato Head bin and created his very own pirate!
