We had a praying mantis join our class last week. The children have had a great time watching him throughout the day.
I sat with a number of children and asked them what they thought the praying mantis was thinking. These are the great responses from the children.
- I want to go outside and be free. I will be safe in the yard. (Nate)
- I want to go to Disneyland (Jayla)
- I want to jump and get out (Karina)
- I am trying to use my legs to push the top off (Max)
- I want to get out super fast (Tayy)
Mrs. King asked "How does he hang on the wall?".
- he has hooks on his legs (Elijah)
- he has hooks (Max)
- he has grips (Nash)
- he has sticky hands (Matthew)
- he has sticky legs (Ethan)
- he has glues on his legs (Cameron)
- his hands are really sticky (Addison)

The children were enjoying having our insect in the classroom so we decided to keep him for a few more days but knew that we had to feed him. So we decided to get some crickets and feed them to our praying mantis.

We kept watching and watching and watching in hopes of seeing the praying mantis eat a cricket. Unfortunately we think he was scared and he didn't eat one of them. We did come back the next day and all the crickets were gone.
